A Real Mom’s Guide to Picking the Right Nappy Bag! What to Look for in a Nappy Bag (Trust This Mama!)
If you're shopping for a nappy bag, you’ve probably already realised — it’s not just a bag. It’s your survival kit. Your portable home. Your emergency station. And let’s be honest... your sanity in a strap.
After plenty of trial and error (and a few too-heavy bags), here’s what I wish someone told me before buying mine:
1. Go for Lightweight – Seriously, Don’t Skip This
That bag might feel light in the store, but once you’ve packed nappies, bottles, snacks, wipes, spare clothes, toys, and your own things, it becomes a kettlebell.
Look for a bag that’s stylish but doesn’t start out heavy. This is one of the reasons we design Doeksaks with lightweight materials — it really makes a difference.
2. Think About Who Will Carry It
Most dads don’t want to walk around with a handbag-style nappy bag. Totally fair.
Backpacks are usually the safe choice for both parents — comfortable, neutral, and easy to carry. Plus, they keep your hands free (which is essential when chasing a toddler in a parking lot).
3. Sling Bags Look Cute... Until They Slide Off Again
Sure, crossbody and sling styles are gorgeous. But they can slide off constantly and dig into your shoulder — especially if they’re loaded. If you’re doing long outings or need something practical, a backpack or structured tote with padded straps is often a better bet. BUT never forget it can be the perfect companion after baby season or for the weekend away weekender bag! Two for the price of one I would say! There’s always another solution – make sure you include the stroller straps so you can hang your sling bag on your stroller – problem solved!
4. Size. Really Does. Matter.
Don’t make the mistake of going too small. A great nappy bag should have room for:
- Bottles
- Nappies
- Wipes
- A change of clothes
- Snacks
- Your wallet, phone, keys (and let’s be honest... a few mystery items too)
Our Doeksak designs focus on giving you smart space — so everything has its place.
5. Easy-Wipe Leather Is a Life Saver
Let’s talk mess. From milk spills to soggy snacks to mystery goo, your bag is going to go through a lot. Choose a leather or fabric that’s easy to wipe down. We only use leather types that clean easily — because no mom wants to deep-clean a bag after a park trip.
Final Thought
Your nappy bag is going to be part of your everyday life. Choose something that works with you — not against you. Lightweight. Spacious. Wipeable. Comfortable. And yes, still beautiful. That’s the Doeksak way.
